May 28, 2005 - Culver City, CA, USA -- Gus Malliarodakis won the Masters class at the NPC California State Bodybuilding Championships. The 42-year-old Malliarodakis, star of the soon-to-be-released feature film "No Pain, No Gain," also placed 2nd in the Super Heavyweight class of the Open division. A crowd favorite, Malliarodakis performed his posing routine to the film's theme song.
Malliarodakis said the win gave him a "strong sense of accomplishment and that it fulfilled one of his life-long goals." He went on to say that his "training went extremely well" and that he had been "really focused." He added that "bodybuilding is not as dependent on age as most other sports. Many bodybuilders actually get better with age and stay competitive well past 40." The truth of this statement was proven as Malliarodakis placed strongly ahead of competitors twenty years his junior.
John Lindsay, the competition's promoter, says of Malliarodakis, "I've known Gus since 1992 when he worked at Champion Nutrition. You won't find a nicer guy. He's always upbeat and positive. Gus loves bodybuilding and bodybuilders. And he's always willing to lend a helping hand to bodybuilders on the way up."
Samuel Turcotte, director of "No Pain, No Gain," attended the competition along with Malliarodakis's wife Sommer and his two youngest sons, Titan (3) and Chase (1), as well as Malliarodakis's sister Tia. Turcotte said "Gus looked fantastic! He just keeps getting better. He's a positive role model and living reflection of all that is great about the classic sport of bodybuilding."
"No Pain, No Gain" is a 35mm feature-length independent film set in the world of bodybuilding starring Malliarodakis and former IFBB Pro Dennis Newman. It is the first feature film set in the world of bodybuilding since the 1977 classic, "Pumping Iron," which launched the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger who has evolved from professional bodybuilder to superstar actor to governor of California.
"No Pain, No Gain" was recently completed and screened as an official selection at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil. It also screened to enthusiastic crowds at the Palm Beach Film Festival and the Houston Film Festival (Worldfest) where it won an award for Best Director, First Feature.
"No Pain, No Gain" will soon be released in theaters, DVD and cable worldwide. For more information visit nopainnogainmovie.com.
